Way, way back in July I started to have some minor problems with muscle strain, followed by the flu and then achilles soreness. I've done some slow running on and off and a couple of time trials to coincide with the City2Surf (ran quite well) and the Burnie Ten (ran quite poorly). I've had periods when I haven't done much running at all.
Last week I did a Google search under "achilles soreness" and found that one of the possible causes is from poorly fitting shoes. My running shoes are first class but my everyday sneakers were from Rivers and I had begun to question their appropriateness. To cut a long story short, I haven't worn them at all since returning from our last trip away at the beginning of the week, instead using my old running shoes (suitably washed in the machine). Over the last few days I have noticed a remarkable improvement in my achilles and have had three runs of 2k each, progressively increasing the pace.
Today's run was my fastest ever over that particular course (I call it HeartBreak Hill) for the one lap and after each run have been relatively free of any stiffness or soreness. For that I am greatly thankful.
My times aren't anything to write home about - except for me - but today I ran the one lap in 13:11.
As I said, it isn't much to write home about but it is a step in the right direction as I prepare myself for another time trial to coincide with the 10k Run Devonport around the middle of March.
